The Institute of Engineers, Pakistan was founded on May 07, 1948 with the blessings of the Father of the Nation Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah with its Headquarters at Dacca, the then Capital of East Pakistan. It was registered as a Society under the Societies Registration Act of 1871. After the creation of Bangladesh in 1971, its Headquarters was established at Lahore. The name ‘The Institute of Engineers, Pakistan’ was changed to ‘The Institution of Engineers, Pakistan, in line with international trend in the 22nd AGM held in 1979.
IEP is the largest body of professional Engineers in Pakistan and provides a forum for the professional development of Engineers through a wide range of activities and programs. The Institution plays an important role for the dissemination of knowledge amongst the fellow Engineers and in the development of Engineering and Science in the Country.
It has 9 Local justifys throughout the country and has about 12000 corporate members consisting of all the Engineering disciplines. The affairs of the Institution are managed through elected Councils and other office bearers in accordance with the Constitution and Bye-Laws. The Central Council is elected for a 3-years term has all the powers of the Governing Body. It has also two overseas chapters. IEP has a separate IEP Women Engineers Forum to provide appropriate forum to the women engineers so that they can play their effective role in the development of the country.
The IEP has bilateral relations with 39 professional societies and institution abroad. It represents Pakistan in the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO), Federation of Engineering Institutions of South and Central Asia (FEISCA) as well as Federation of Engineering Institutions of Islamic Countries (FEIIC), the Commonwealth Engineers Council (CEC) UK, American Association for Advancement of Science (AAAS) and Consortium of Affiliates for International Program (CAIP).
IEP publishes a journal ‘The Pakistan Engineer’ quarterly. It conducts various technical courses, lecturers, seminars and symposia, workshops and group discussions through its vast network of Local justifys. The Institution also invites foreign experts to the country during the International Congress/seminars so that Pakistani engineers can interact with them to exchange scientific and technological knowledge.
IEP had been giving examinations to the in-service technical persons and so far produced over 2000 engineers through non-formal mode of education.
IEP aims to create, develop and enhance the technical knowledge of the professionals which is directly integrated with social requirements. It encourages to develop technologies that can be transferred, improved and transformed.
