Therapy Works is a counselling and psychotherapy centre affiliated with the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB) in the United Kingdom and is a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). The organization offers a wide variety of diverse services in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad.
Mental health is one of the most neglected fields in Pakistan, despite increases in the number of people suffering from psychological and mental disorders in the country. Given the scarcity of data on mental illnesses in Pakistan, it is hard to provide an exact or accurate estimate of the percentage of our country’s population living with psychological problems. However, it has been estimated that at least 15 million people in Pakistan suffer from some form of mental illness.
Therapy Works was established in 2007 in response to the growing demand for highly qualified professionals to work sensitively and creatively with people, and who would be equipped with a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic tools to serve the people of Pakistan who have no mass emotional health support from established sources.
There are currently two existing mental health paradigms in Pakistan, conventional psychiatry and clinical psychology. 180 million people are currently provided health cover by less than 500 psychiatrists primarily confined to 5 major cities only. Counselling and therapy within these approaches is limited to pharmacology (medical model) and CBT practice, both are underpaid and overworked.
The rest of the people of Pakistan have no support in an environment where violence, unemployment, extremism and terrorism create severe anxiety, frustration, anger and fear. Therapy Works is bringing emotional health on a mass scale to the people of Pakistan by training more and more individuals in Counselling and Psychotherapy. This concept does not exist in Pakistan.
Therapy Works is committed to the alleviation of emotional suffering through improved self-awareness and more informed choices about one’s true self.
